About Institute of Nutrition and Food Science

The Institute of Nutrition and Food Science has a group of qualified and experienced teachers, trainers and other faculty members. They are from different disciplines such as Nutritional Biochemistry, Food science, Microbiology and different types of nutritional subjects such as, Bio-statistics, Bioengineering and Instrumentation.

The Institute has its own stock of books. It has a library having more than 10,000 books, journals and periodicals. These books are on Nutrition Science, Biochemistry, Medical Science, Food science, Economics, Microbiology, Bio statistics, Sociology, Computer and Instrumentation, etc.

Research at Institute of Nutrition and Food Science

Apart from the different academic programs of INFS, the activities include Basic and Applied Research in different aspects and fields of Nutrition and Food Science. This includes nutrition survey, laboratory experiments, research in nutrition, food sciences, microbiology, health sciences, and food and nutrition policy with other activities as well.

Institute of Nutrition and Food Science has conducted most of the research and training programs in Bangladesh since its establishment. Moreover, INFS has also played a vital role in nutrition advocacy. This has drawn attention into nutritional problems and at the same time, devising ways and means to tackle it.

Furthermore, the institute aspires to continue its academic as well as training programme in the different fields of nutrition and food science for the development of trained manpower, accessing field level activities, conducting laboratory experiments, monitoring and analysing nutritional problems and evaluating intervention programs.

Courses to Study at Institute of Nutrition and Food Science

B.Sc. Honours in Food and Nutrition: The B.Sc. Honours course in Food and Nutrition is a 4 years degree course, which is divided into 4 semesters. The examination is taken at the end of each semester year. Each student is expected to take a total of 32 units of the courses extending over the 4 academic years. This program consists of both theoretical and applied natures.

The course has been designed such, that after successful completion of the program graduates get placed in government as well as non governmental organizations.

Admission in B.Sc. Honours in Food and Nutrition: Students securing high marks in SSC and HSC or equivalent examinations with Mathematics as a subject of study are eligible for admission. The regulations for admission of the students as well as the examinations are the same as those of the B.Sc. Honours Course in the Faculty of Science.

An entrance test is conducted by the Dhaka University and students have to appear for it, in order to pursue higher education in Food and Nutrition.

M.Sc. in Food and Nutrition: The Master of Science or M.Sc. course in Food and Nutrition is a one year program where the M.Sc. examination in Food and Nutrition is taken in 2 groups. One being the general group and the other is the thesis group.

Admission in M. Sc. in Food and Nutrition: Generally the successful students of the B.Sc. (Honors) course in Food and nutrition are permitted to seek admission in the one year Masters program. The regulation for admission of the students and the examinations will be the same as of the M.Sc. course in the faculty of Science.
