Education in Bangladesh

The Ministry of Education, in the Government of Bangladesh is an apex Government body to make decisions on Education System and various other Educational policies of the country. The ministry is responsible for governing Education beginning from pre primary to higher, higher technical and vocational education levels. Further, the ministry also looks after the education provided by madrasas. There are about 30,864 Primary, Secondary Schools, Colleges, Madrasas and 26 public and 56 private Universities. The Education System in Bangladesh has three stages which includes both School Education and University Education.

School Education in Bangladesh

Schooling has utmost importance in a child’s life since, this is the stage when a child starts the process of learning with a peer group. Thus, being away from the family makes children independent and shapes their future. The importance of schooling promotes scrutiny in this system under experts for review and analysis. At present Bangladesh has following patterns of schooling:
  • Primary education for children aged between 6 to 11 years.
  • Secondary education is distributed into three years of junior secondary, 2 years of secondary and 2 year of higher secondary. A child starts taking secondary education at 11 years of age and completes it by 16 to 17 years of age. 
The Primary level of Education in Bangladesh is provided in two major categories 
  • General
  • Madrasa
The Secondary level of Education has three major streams
  • General
  • Technical and Vocational
  • Madrasa.

Higher Education in Bangladesh

Higher education system in Bangladesh comprises of three distinct streams which are as follows,

  • General (inclusive of pure and applied science, arts, business and social science), 
  • Madrasa and 
  • Technological Education: Technological Education includes Agriculture, Engineering, Medical, Textile, Leather Technology and ICT. 
Further, the Madrasas function parallel to the three major streams as they have similar core courses as in the general stream (primary, secondary and post-secondary). However, they have additional emphasis on religious studies. For students who wish to pursue specialization in specific disciplines, can take admissions into different colleges and universities. Both of these options are self supported and run either by Government or Private ownership. 

As a matter of fact, with the onset of development in the Education System of Bangladesh, many foreign educators have started to set their bases here.
